Have you ever seen eclipses?

posted Mar 07, 2016 07:08:06 by RedSeol
I heard from news today that there is a solar eclipse coming soon and it will be visible from Indonesia.

I have never seen any eclipses myself and I'd love to see one in my lifetime. I have heard that it is actually possible to see the eclipse without telescope or any other tool, though it is advised to use protection glasses to avoid harm. I have never experienced the side effects of eclipses either, such as problem in electricity. In a sense I hope that I will never experience it, though it is an experience you can't just get anywhere.

I saw an eclipse once when I was in high school. Many of the students would just look up without any tool because it only happened for a few minutes and no one wanted to miss it. I used a piece of colored, translucent plastic.

I have always missed them. Every time there was an eclipse, either it was too early and I missed it because I was sleeping, or I only knew about it when it was too late. I also would love to see one.

I have witnessed several eclipses in my lifetime. Living in the Northern Hemisphere I have been lucky to have both visibility and timing on my side. They are truly amazing to behold, but you do need to take precautions when viewing them. I read an article in the last year or two where a teenager did indeed burn out her retinas from viewing one with the naked eye, so it is not an old wives tale.

Sarah W, what kind of protection did you wear? RayOliver, did you feel anything different looking at the eclipse via translucent plastic? It is generally advised to use a black sunglasses to see the eclipse although technically it is not the correct tool to protect the eyes. A friend mentioned that she tried looking at the sun using black sunglasses because it was too bright and she managed to see the partial eclipse. I am so envious!

I witnessed a solar eclipse when I was around 8 years old. I was in the garden playing when the surroundings became dark; I looked up and saw the strangest sight! My mother promptly told me to avert my gaze but I did take a second look.
